# Vault OS

> The single operating doc for this vault. It replaces the old *Life OS Setup Manual* (archived). The rule it's built on: **this vault earns its keep only when reading turns into a thought or an artifact.** Optimize for output, not organization.

## The diagnosis this fixes

The old system was built for *capturing and organizing* — a 5-stage promotion model, heavy frontmatter (`usefulness`, `*_auto`, `distilled_to`, `used_in`), 2×/week triage, ~50 database views. None of it was maintained: `references/` held one note, `knowledge/` was empty, daily notes died in Dec 2025, and the manual described a `memory/` folder that doesn't exist. Capture worked; **creation didn't** — which is backwards, because creation is the actual goal (and the stated weakness: *packaging*). So: less structure, one synthesis step at the bottleneck.

## The only loop that matters

This is the *input side of the [[content-strategy/Content Strategy|content strategy]]* — same machine, not a second system. Live dashboards already exist; use them, don't rebuild them:

- **`categories/Sources Inbox.md`** — unreviewed clippings
- **`categories/Ideas Pipeline.md`** — your idea notes by stage
- **`categories/Triage Queue.md`** — what's waiting

## Two tiny rituals (that's all)

**1. Capture (seconds, anytime).** Clip freely into `clippings/`. If it sparked something, add one line at the top: `My take: …`. That's the whole obligation. Don't process the backlog daily. Don't fill metadata.

**2. Weekly Synthesis (~45 min, one session, one artifact).** This is the real OS — it replaces the four dead cadences. Run the command, then write one thing:

It reads the week's new clippings, surfaces the 3 most idea-worthy, names the **non-obvious connection between them**, and drafts post-angle seeds in your voice into a dated note in `ideas/`. Then you pick one and ship it — a Field Note, a developed idea, or an interview-ready POV. *Cadence that ships beats cadence that files.*

## Idea notes: keep them atomic

When something genuinely sparks, make a note in `ideas/` where **the title is the claim** (e.g. *"Coding-first is a capability bet; distribution is a separate bet."*). One paragraph of your own thinking. Link the source with `[[ ]]`. Skip the Claim/Why/Evidence/Counterpoint form — that 6-field template is why only 6 ideas exist in four months.

## What's deprecated (and why)

- **`references/` and `knowledge/` as stages** — unused. If a clipping is worth keeping, it stays in `clippings/`. No migration ritual.
- **The 5-stage status model + `*_auto` / `distilled_to` / `used_in` frontmatter** — organizing overhead that was never maintained. Gone.
- **Daily notes as a system** — died Dec 2025; not revived. (Keep a 60-second daily one-liner only if you actually want it; otherwise the weekly session is the log.)
- **~45 life-tracking `.base` databases** (Recipes, Board games, Movies, Trips, Companies, Events, …) — archived to `templates/_archive/bases/`. Reversible. Kept: the ones with real data (Books, Music, Games, Podcasts, Stack/Products, Meetings) and the loop/daily views.
- **DeepSeek references** — you're on Claude now; the synthesis step is `/vault-synthesis`.

## The vault's separate jobs (don't let cadences collide)

- **Think/Write loop:** `clippings/ → ideas/ → posts/` (the live core, weekly cadence)
- **Library:** `library/` — only the categories you actually track (books, podcasts, stack, music, games)
- **Work:** `work memos/` (Epic) — its own cadence
- **Job search:** `jobs-resume-studio/` (resume system) — separate
- **Content engine:** `content-strategy/` — the output strategy this loop feeds

## The system is working if

- you capture in seconds without guilt,
- once a week a connection you wouldn't have seen shows up in `ideas/`,
- and more of what you read turns into something with your name on it.

Everything else is optional.
